Welcome to THE MOUTH of the South Bay

Hello and welcome to South Bay Mouth.

Many of you may already know why this is site is called The Mouth, but for those that don't, locals commonly call the South Bay, "Mouth Bay."  The South Bay is a section of  South Los Angeles County encompassing a cluster of beach cities.

For a long time now I have wanted to create a place where locals and visitors alike can see what is going on and available to them in the South Bay.  Although I have lived most of my life in the area, I realize there is so much to do and see that I was never aware of.  I hear of great events and local fun and often when I share it with others they say they have lived here for so long and they never knew about it!  So, here we are... My hopes are that this site will provide something new to improve the quality of your life in the South Bay.  I do believe this site will be beneficial to both those living the single life and to families.  Please visit the South Bay Mouth often to stay on top of special events, new restaurants/shops, bargains and sales, reviews and opinions, bands and music, a video from an aspiring Chef or even just a photo of a beautiful sunset.

Stay tuned for updates and posts and please leave comments and share us with your friends.

GIllette Fusion Razor $1

Last night I was browsing Walmart for some bargains as I am out in Utah, where Walmart is a popular place to go.  I was not super impressed with their prices but I did find one great deal, especially for any Denver Broncos lovers.

Look in the shaving area OR in your clearance section.  The Gillette Fusion Razor that is a special BRONCOS edition is on clearance for $5.00.  Match that up with the $4 off any Gillette Fusion Razor coupon from the 2/7 PG and you will have a new razor and a couple of blades for $1.  These are usually priced between $7-$10 on average.  You could even buy 5 razors if you have the coupons and it would be about $10 less than buying refill blades.

I can not find a photo anywhere but this is a great deal. :)

MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT in the SOUTH BAY

Music History in the South Bay

It is fair to say that everyone loves music, some genre or style speaks to each individual in its own way.  The South Bay community must be full of music lovers when you sit back and think of the long line of live music venues that have been housed along the beach cities.  The most popular was once "Anabelles," which changed to "The Strand" and had its final days as "Club Caprice" before closing its doors at the turn of the millennium.  The same place that was once the Plush Horse, a steakhouse of sorts, later became the biggest night club in all of the South Bay.  Many of you know what I am talking about, but to some what you now know as Bristol Farms on the corner of Palos Verdes Blvd and PCH was once a place that I would work all hours of the night alongside amazing talents in a room filled with tobacco smoke, bopping around to the sounds of  harmonious melodies and bass filled beats.

There are memories I will always hold with me, memories that will make me smile every time I drive past the Bristol Farms that is now in place of where I spent most of my evenings in the mid 90's to the early 2000's.  I had been a patron of "The Strand" as a tween and in hindsight I scored a pretty amazing job for a high school  kid when I became the Head Hostess at Club Caprice.  My daily income was not only dependent on how many hours I worked, but it was mostly based upon the talent we showcased and where I sat my guests.  We always had a few tables we would hold aside, ready to be the prime spot for the highest bidder.  The most memorable experience for me beyond the music and meeting Keanu Reeves or Kevin Bacon etc, would be working New Years Eve 1997 in a smoke filled cloudy bar and going back to work on New Years Day of 1998 to the first day that I would never have to work in a room filled with smoke again.  It was an amazing change.  I was actually able to breathe and see the artists on stage from my humble little hostess desk.  Thank you California!

Music Talent from the South Bay

Various musicians have come from the South Bay, why the majority of those that made it were from the Hardcore Punk and Alternative genre is perhaps in relation to the beach culture that adopted the surf and skate sports that have labeled our local scene.  The most successful and universal of the talents to claim the South Bay as home would be the Beach Boys, staking their stomping grounds to be the city Hawthorne. Much of what we know today to be South Bay music got their influence and start from Black Flag who also created a label that got a lot of other kids in town their start to stardom.  Other South Bay based artists are Pennywise, The Deviates, 98 Mute, Circle Jerks, The Descendants and more.

Music Now in the South Bay

There are a dozen or so venues now in the South Bay where you can go to enjoy local talents and some that house big names for a night.  Nothing out there is quite like what my corner used to be, but there does seem to be something for everyone.

My new favorite location would have to be Saint Rocke, not only do they have an impressive line up, but they offer a delicious menu, friendly service, fair ticket prices and the ambience is comfortable and catered to those that dress smart and want to have a good time.  My first time was for a night of dueling pianos which is always fun, and shortly after I went for a Halloween costume extravaganza put on by Scoop magazine.  SR has showcased many local talents as well as those like Ziggy Marley.

You can watch the sunset at the beach, walk along the strand, have dinner at an old classic on the Pier and then end your night with some live music at Brixton on the Redondo Beach Pier.  Although there has been a heap of turnover in this seemingly underground location, the talent that has been housed in this venue with no windows may surprise you.  I know a couple of people that went to see Sheila E perform and were surprised when the man formerly known as Prince appeared on the stage and surely shocked those that went to see some cheap entertainment.  Just recently they had the English Beat and they will soon be having Shawn Colvin.

The venues are vast and varied and there should be something to suit the tastes of everyone around.  If you want more Blues or Funk and Soul then Cafe Boogaloo may be the right place, there are an abundance of bars housing DJ's on nearly every night or you can even go to a small strip mall hole in the wall on Tuesdays for Open Mic night at Suzy's bar.  To end it all,  what was once the hottest club in the South Bay for live music may be gone, but there are still a lot of choices to bring music to your ears and a beat to your step.

You can visit a few websites to see what is coming soon to the South Bay.
Saint Rocke

*there are many more out there, but these are a few favorites*

$1 Hot Dog on a Stick TUESDAYS

Every Tuesday for 2010 you can get a Hot Dog on a Stick for $1 at your local Hot Dog on a Stick location.  Hot Dog on a Stick corndogs are all Turkey.  I love getting the Pepper Cheese on a stick personally, I wish they were included in the offer.  The lemonade is most certainly one of the best you will ever have.  $1 corndogs sounds like a cheap and fun outing for your family!

Fringe by the sea in Redondo Beach

So I admit I am somewhat partial to the beauty of FRINGE, I have to be, my mom owns the place!  My mother Debbie and our friend Laura opened FRINGE in the Redondo Beach Riviera Village in the summer of 2009.  Prior to our new lovely beach location, we were on a corner in the quaint South bay town of Lomita.  We absolutely love our new location and what Debbie and Laura have created in their space is becoming the talk of the town.  This week the LA Times did an online article in their HOME BLOG about Fringe, California Meets Provence at Fringe, and we are very thankful that they found us and loved us.

Have you been to Fringe? If not, what are you waiting for!

MONTE PITTMAN (from Madonna and Adam Lambert) Tomorrow in Hermosa Beach!

Tuesday, February 2, 2010, South Bay people are in for a treat.  Monte Pittman, the guitar player and teacher for Madonna, Prong and also for the American Idol favorite Adam Lambert, will be performing during an OPEN MIC Night at Suzy's Bar in Hermosa Beach.  Not sure exactly what time Monte will be on stage but he will be getting there to be ready to go up at about 7pm.  He is very talented, not only for his great guitar skills but he is an amazing song writer with a beautiful voice.  Monte is very all around as a musician so this is a great opportunity to see him perform in a small local venue.  You can listen to his album that was released a few months ago on cd baby here.  My personal favorite of his songs is called "After the Last Wave."

We hope to see you there. :)

CVS OBSESSED! GET FREE STUFF!!!

There is so much to say about CVS and the program they offer.  If you have an open mind and perhaps a little bit of patience, you too should be able to benefit from their Extra Bucks programs.

You can get started today with about $5.00 out of pocket and be on your way to FREEdom!

Step 1.
Cut out the DOVE Men+Care Coupon on the back of the REDPLUM coupon book in your Sunday newspaper.  If you do not have the newspaper, then you can go here to print a $1 off coupon
*If you can get 2 coupons that would be best!*

Step 2.
Go to CVS and if you do not already have an EXTRA BUCK REWARDS card then grab one usually on a table by the front door.  You do not have to fill out all of the information today, you can do it later or not at all.

Step 3.
Find the RED Price Scanner, usually near the cards/cashier/front door.  Scan the barcode on your EB (Extra Buck) card and wait a minute.  A couple of coupons will print out, do this until the screen tell you no more coupons are available.

Step 4.
Go to the Body Wash section and grab 2 bottles of the DOVE Men+Care Body Wash priced at $5.49. You will also need to find something worth the face value of your coupon for the second transaction (bottle of water etc...)

Step 5.
Go to the cashier and when you are up tell them you want to do 2 separate transactions and use your Extra Bucks on the second one.  Be sure to give them your coupons your printed or cut for DOVE before you ring up and give them your EB card.

What will happen???  You will be paying about $4.50 out of pocket and receive 1 DOVE MEN, then your receipt will have EXTRA BUCKS printed at the end of it for $5.49.  For the second transaction you will have them ring up the second bottle of DOVE MEN and an item(s) worth the value of the coupon you will use.  You will then give your coupon and Extra Bucks and may pay a few cents but you will leave with 2 bottle of Dove, a bonus item AND be given another $5.49 in Extra Bucks to spend.

You can either go buy something you needed with that money OR you can do what I do and roll it over to get another item that gives me more EXTRA BUCKS!  You can keep recycling the original $5 you spent.

SO HOW CONFUSED ARE YOU??? Probably very confused, but it can be so much fun, addicting and rewarding when you catch on.  A great site you can use to learn more about CVS is I HEART CVS.  Happy Shopping!!!
